Washington, DC — Today, Congressman August Pfluger, along with Speaker Mike Johnson and other House impeachment managers, have urged Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to promptly schedule an impeachment trial for Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. This call comes in the wake of the House's approval of two articles of impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas. The House is set to transmit these articles to the Senate on April 10th, 2024.

In a statement released after sending the letter to Senator Schumer, Rep. August Pfluger emphasized the importance of a fair trial, stating, “Any Senator who votes to dismiss the impeachment articles is dismissing the cries of millions of Americans who have been negatively impacted by the border crisis. Senator Chuck Schumer must hold a thorough trial that lays out the evidence on why Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas deserves to be impeached for his role in the catastrophic border crisis."

The letter sent to Senator Schumer highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating, "The evidence on both charges is clear, comprehensive, and compelling, and the House’s solemn act to impeach the first sitting Cabinet official in American history demands timely action by the Senate… The constitutional grounds for Secretary Mayorkas’ conviction and removal from office are well-founded, and the historical record is clear."

The lawmakers further stressed the importance of upholding the constitutional duty to conduct a trial, noting that failing to do so would be a violation of the constitutional order and a disservice to the American people. They called for accountability for those responsible for the border crisis and emphasized the need for a secure border and an end to the ongoing crisis.

The House's move to impeach Secretary Mayorkas marks a significant development, with Congressman Pfluger and his colleagues pushing for a public trial to address the issues at hand. The full text of the letter can be accessed for further details.
